About Lovaza
Overview
Lovaza capsules contain omega-3-acid ethyl esters derived from fish oils, mainly EPA and DHA. It is used alongside diet to lower triglycerides in adults with severely elevated levels (500 mg/dL or higher). How it works is not fully understood, but it may reduce the amount of triglycerides made by the liver. Its effects on the risk of pancreatitis, cardiovascular illness or cardiovascular death have not been determined.
What it treats
- Severe hypertriglyceridemia (triglyceride levels of 500 mg/dL or higher) in adults, used alongside diet to lower triglyceride levels.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include burping, indigestion and changes in taste. Lovaza may be associated with more frequent episodes of symptomatic atrial fibrillation or flutter in people who already have these heart rhythm conditions, particularly during the first few months of treatment. Contact your doctor if these episodes recur or become more frequent. Lovaza may increase LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, which should be checked periodically during treatment. People with liver impairment also need periodic liver enzyme blood tests. Tell your doctor if you have a known allergy to fish or shellfish, as Lovaza should be used with caution.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Lovaza if you have a known allergy to it or any of its ingredients, including a previous severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Use caution if you have an allergy to fish or shellfish. If you have liver impairment, liver enzymes (ALT and AST) should be checked periodically during treatment. Lovaza may increase LDL cholesterol, so LDL levels should also be checked periodically. If you have paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation, Lovaza may be associated with more frequent episodes of symptomatic atrial fibrillation or flutter, particularly during the first few months of treatment.
Interactions
Lovaza may prolong bleeding time. Tell your doctor if you take anticoagulants (blood thinners), antiplatelet medicines or other medicines that affect blood clotting. Periodic monitoring is recommended when these medicines are taken with Lovaza.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
