About Lodotra
Overview
Lodotra contains prednisone, a glucocorticoid steroid, and is supplied as prescription tablets. Prednisone is used for conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, severe psoriasis and severe allergies that have not responded to usual treatment. It is also used to control severe allergic and inflammatory conditions affecting the eyes.
What it treats
- Certain hormone disorders, including adrenal insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and thyroid inflammation. - Short-term add-on treatment for flare-ups of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout and certain other joint or tendon disorders. - Lupus, inflammatory muscle disease and acute rheumatic inflammation of the heart. - Severe skin conditions, including pemphigus, severe psoriasis and exfoliative dermatitis. - Severe allergies, including allergic rhinitis, asthma and allergic skin reactions, when conventional treatment has not been adequate. - Severe allergic or inflammatory eye conditions. - Certain lung conditions, including symptomatic sarcoidosis and aspiration pneumonitis. - Certain blood disorders, including low platelet counts in adults and autoimmune hemolytic anemia. - Palliative treatment of leukemia and lymphoma in adults, and acute leukemia in children. - Certain cases of nephrotic syndrome. - Ulcerative colitis and regional enteritis during critical periods. - Certain severe tuberculosis complications, alongside appropriate tuberculosis treatment, and trichinosis affecting the nervous system or heart.
Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not take this medicine if you have a systemic fungal infection (a fungal infection affecting the body internally) or a known allergy to any of its ingredients.
Interactions
Prednisone can interact with several medicines. Raise the following with your doctor: Warfarin: prednisone can alter its blood-thinning effect, so frequent blood-clotting tests may be needed. Diabetes medicines may need adjustment because prednisone can raise blood sugar. Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the risk of stomach and intestinal side effects when taken with prednisone. Stopping prednisone can also increase the risk of salicylate toxicity. Potassium-depleting medicines, including diuretics and amphotericin B, can increase the risk of low potassium and require close monitoring. Low potassium can increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms in people taking digitalis medicines. Ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics may increase the risk of tendon rupture when used with prednisone, particularly in older people. Tendon rupture can occur during or after antibiotic treatment. Neostigmine and pyridostigmine may cause severe weakness in people with myasthenia gravis when combined with corticosteroids; combined treatment requires close supervision. Bupropion requires particular caution because both medicines can increase susceptibility to seizures. Cyclosporine and prednisone may increase each other’s effects, and seizures have been reported with combined use. Thalidomide requires caution because a severe skin reaction called toxic epidermal necrolysis has been reported with corticosteroid use. Medicines that can change prednisone’s breakdown or effects include barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, indinavir, macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin, cholestyramine, and estrogens, including oral contraceptives. Ketoconazole can increase corticosteroid side effects and may contribute to adrenal insufficiency when corticosteroid treatment is withdrawn. Prednisone can also lower levels of some other medicines, including isoniazid, indinavir and erythromycin. Quetiapine treatment may need adjustment to maintain symptom control. Vaccines may be less effective during prednisone treatment, and organisms in some live vaccines may multiply more readily. Discuss vaccination timing with your doctor; the label advises deferring routine vaccines until corticosteroid treatment has ended, if possible. Prednisone can also suppress reactions to skin tests.
