About Lanoxin
Overview
Lanoxin contains digoxin, a cardiac glycoside medicine. It is used to treat mild to moderate heart failure in adults and to help the heart contract more strongly in children with heart failure. It is also used to control the heart’s ventricular rate at rest in adults with chronic atrial fibrillation. It works by increasing the force of heart contractions and slowing electrical signals through part of the heart, which slows the heart rate.

- Mild to moderate heart failure in adults. - Heart failure in children, to help the heart contract more strongly. - Chronic atrial fibrillation in adults, to control the heart’s ventricular rate at rest.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include nausea, vomiting and changes in vision. These may be signs of digoxin toxicity, so contact a doctor promptly if they occur. Serious effects include abnormal heart rhythms and advanced or complete heart block. In people with an extra electrical pathway in the heart, digoxin can cause a dangerously fast heart rhythm, including ventricular fibrillation. Seek urgent medical advice for suspected heart rhythm problems. The risk of digoxin toxicity is higher in older people and those with low body weight, impaired kidney function or abnormal electrolyte levels.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Lanoxin if you have ventricular fibrillation or a known allergy to digoxin or other digitalis medicines. Allergic reactions may include an unexplained rash, swelling of the mouth, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing. Lanoxin should be avoided in people with myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and is not recommended during an acute heart attack. Extra caution is needed if you have: - An extra electrical pathway in the heart (an AV accessory pathway), because of the risk of a dangerously fast heart rhythm. - Sinus node disease or AV block, because of the risk of advanced or complete heart block. - Kidney impairment, low body weight or abnormal electrolyte levels, which increase the risk of digoxin toxicity. Older adults are also at increased risk and need careful monitoring for side effects. - Planned electrical cardioversion, because of the risk of abnormal rhythms in the heart’s lower chambers. Signs of digoxin toxicity include nausea, vomiting, changes in vision and abnormal heart rhythms. It is unknown whether Lanoxin can harm an unborn baby when used during pregnancy. Newborn babies vary in how well they tolerate Lanoxin.
Interactions
Digoxin has a narrow safety margin, so medicines that interact with it may increase the risk of toxicity. Medicines that increase or block the activity of P-glycoprotein (PGP) can affect how the body handles digoxin. Check with your doctor before starting, changing or stopping any other medicine. Closer monitoring of digoxin blood levels and signs of toxicity may be needed when an interacting medicine is started, adjusted or stopped.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
