Before taking this medicine

Do not take terbinafine tablets if you have chronic or active liver disease, or if you have previously had an allergic reaction to oral terbinafine, because of the risk of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Serious liver injury, including liver failure requiring a transplant or causing death, has occurred in people with and without existing liver disease. Liver function tests are needed before treatment and periodically during treatment. Stop taking the tablets and contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop persistent nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, vomiting, upper-right abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools. Stop taking the tablets and contact your prescriber if your taste or smell changes or is lost; these effects can be prolonged or permanent. Report depressive symptoms to your prescriber. Additional caution and possible blood count monitoring are needed if you have a known or suspected immune deficiency. Severe reductions in infection-fighting white blood cells have been reported. Treatment must be stopped if a worsening rash, signs of a serious skin or allergic reaction, or signs of lupus develop. Terbinafine has also been linked to serious small-blood-vessel disorders, sometimes fatal; unexplained low platelet counts or anaemia require further evaluation. These precautions apply to terbinafine tablets; the supplied label does not cover the cream.
