About IXIARO
Overview
IXIARO is a vaccine containing inactivated Japanese encephalitis virus. It is approved to help prevent disease caused by Japanese encephalitis virus in people aged 2 months and older. The virus is spread by mosquitoes. The vaccine works by prompting the body to produce antibodies that neutralize the virus.

Prevention of disease caused by Japanese encephalitis virus in people aged 2 months and older.

Side effects
Common side effects vary by age. In infants aged 2 months to under 1 year, they include redness at the injection site, fever, irritability and diarrhea. In children aged 1 to under 12 years, fever is the most common general side effect. In adolescents aged 12 to under 18 years, pain and tenderness at the injection site are most common. In adults, common side effects include injection-site pain and tenderness, headache and muscle pain. IXIARO contains protamine sulfate, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. Contact a doctor if you suspect an allergic reaction.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not receive IXIARO if you have had a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to a previous dose of IXIARO, another Japanese encephalitis vaccine, or any ingredient in IXIARO, including protamine sulfate. IXIARO contains protamine sulfate, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you have had a severe allergic reaction to another Japanese encephalitis vaccine and IXIARO is being considered, you may be referred to an allergy specialist for evaluation.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
