About Intrarosa
Overview
Intrarosa is a vaginal suppository containing prasterone, a steroid. It treats moderate to severe pain during sex associated with menopause. This pain is a symptom of vulvar and vaginal atrophy, the thinning and shrinking of these tissues.
What it treats
Moderate to severe pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia) due to vulvar and vaginal atrophy associated with menopause.
Safety information
Side effects
Vaginal discharge was the most common side effect in 12-week trials of Intrarosa. Vaginal discharge and abnormal Pap smear results were the most common side effects in a 52-week trial. Abnormal Pap results included atypical cells and low-grade changes in cervical cells. Discuss an abnormal Pap smear result with your doctor. Also tell your doctor if you have or have had breast cancer. Prasterone is converted in the body to estrogen. The label warns that estrogen treatment must not be used in women with known or suspected breast cancer, and Intrarosa has not been studied in women with a history of breast cancer.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Intrarosa if you have unexplained abnormal genital bleeding. Persistent or recurring bleeding after menopause must be evaluated to determine its cause before treatment is considered. If you have or have had breast cancer, discuss this with your prescriber before use. Prasterone is converted in the body into estrogen. The label states that estrogen treatment must not be used in women with a known or suspected history of breast cancer. Intrarosa has not been studied in women with a history of breast cancer. Intrarosa is intended only for women after menopause. There are no data on its risks during pregnancy or its effects during breastfeeding. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established. The effects of kidney or liver impairment on how the body processes prasterone have not been studied.
