Before taking this medicine

Do not use heparin if you have: • A history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), a fall in platelet count caused by heparin, with or without associated blood clots. • A known allergy to heparin or pork products. • A severely low platelet count. • Uncontrolled active bleeding, unless it is due to disseminated intravascular coagulation. • No access to appropriate blood-clotting tests at the required intervals when receiving full-dose heparin. Heparin requires caution in conditions that increase the risk of bleeding. Bleeding can be fatal, and a higher incidence has been reported in people over 60, particularly women. Platelet count and hematocrit should be monitored in all patients. Heparin must be stopped if signs suggest HIT or HIT with blood clots. Heparin can cause high blood potassium. Potassium should be checked before treatment in people at risk and periodically in all patients. The correct strength must be confirmed before administration because fatal medication errors have occurred. Human pregnancy data are limited. The label advises against breastfeeding during treatment. Products containing benzyl alcohol must not be used in newborns or infants.
