About Glassia
Overview
Glassia contains alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor (human), also known as alpha-1-antitrypsin, purified from human plasma. It is used for ongoing replacement and maintenance therapy in adults with clinically evident emphysema caused by severe inherited alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. It supplements the deficient protein to help inhibit an enzyme that can break down the walls of the lungs’ air sacs. Its effect on lung flare-ups and the progression of emphysema has not been conclusively demonstrated in randomized, controlled clinical trials.
What it treats
• Long-term replacement and maintenance therapy for adults with clinically evident emphysema caused by severe hereditary alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency.
Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effects reported in clinical trials were headache and upper respiratory infection. Serious reactions include worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which was observed in clinical trials. Contact a doctor if your COPD worsens. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur in people with IgA deficiency who have antibodies against IgA, and in those with a history of allergic reactions to other Alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor products. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction. Glassia may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents, including viruses, the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) agent and, theoretically, the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) agent.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Glassia if you have immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency with antibodies against IgA, or if you have previously had anaphylaxis or another severe whole-body reaction to an Alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor product. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur in people with IgA deficiency and antibodies against IgA, and in those with a history of allergic reactions to other Alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor products. Glassia may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents, including viruses and the agent that causes variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). There is also a theoretical risk of transmitting the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) agent.
