Before taking this medicine

Do not take Geodon if you have a known allergy to ziprasidone, a history of QT prolongation (a heart rhythm abnormality), a recent heart attack, or heart failure that is not adequately controlled. Do not take it with other medicines known to prolong the QT interval, with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI. Geodon should be avoided if you have a slow heartbeat, low blood potassium or magnesium, or congenital QT prolongation. It requires caution in people with heart or blood vessel disease, a history of stroke or other disease affecting blood flow to the brain, or seizures or conditions that increase seizure risk. Older people with dementia-related psychosis have an increased risk of stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Tell your prescriber if you have diabetes or risk factors for diabetes, a low white blood cell count, or a history of low white blood cells. Blood glucose, weight and, in some patients, blood counts need monitoring. Other medicines that affect serotonin increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, although it can also occur with Geodon alone. Serious risks include potentially fatal neuroleptic malignant syndrome and severe skin reactions, as well as involuntary movements. Geodon should be stopped if a severe skin reaction is suspected or a rash develops without an identified cause. People at high risk of suicide need close supervision. Use caution when operating machinery because Geodon may impair thinking and movement. Use during the third trimester of pregnancy may cause movement problems or withdrawal symptoms in the newborn.
