About Florinef
Overview
Florinef contains fludrocortisone acetate, a synthetic adrenal steroid. It is used as partial hormone replacement for primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency in Addison’s disease and to treat salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome. It works by replacing the effects of adrenal hormones called mineralocorticoids.

Safety information
Side effects
Most side effects of Florinef are related to salt and water retention. These include high blood pressure, swelling and potassium loss. Other reported effects include headache, dizziness, increased sweating, bruising, fragile skin, acne-like eruptions, increased hair growth, difficulty sleeping and menstrual changes. Contact a doctor if you develop side effects, particularly worsening swelling, muscle weakness, poor wound healing, signs of infection, severe mental changes or allergic skin reactions. Serious reported effects include heart enlargement, congestive heart failure, low potassium with an abnormal blood acid–base balance, stomach ulcers that may bleed or perforate, inflammation of the pancreas, seizures, increased pressure inside the skull, blood clots in veins and severe allergic reactions. Other potentially serious effects include osteoporosis and fractures, bone tissue damage, loss of muscle mass, cataracts, glaucoma and increased blood sugar. Existing diabetes may require changes to treatment. Corticosteroids can worsen or hide infections, suppress growth in children and reduce the body’s normal adrenal response, especially during illness, injury or surgery. Effects associated with glucocorticoids are particularly relevant with prolonged use or when Florinef is taken with cortisone or a similar medicine.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Florinef if you have a systemic fungal infection (a fungal infection within the body) or a history of a known or suspected allergic reaction to corticosteroids.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medicines or are planning a vaccination: - Amphotericin B or potassium-depleting diuretics, such as furosemide or ethacrynic acid: these can increase the risk of low potassium. Your doctor may check potassium levels frequently and prescribe potassium supplements if needed. - Digitalis medicines: low potassium can increase the risk of irregular heartbeats or digitalis toxicity. Potassium monitoring may be needed. - Oral anticoagulants: their effect may be reduced, requiring blood-clotting tests and treatment adjustment. - Diabetes medicines, including insulin: their effect may be reduced. Monitoring for high blood sugar and treatment adjustment may be needed. - Aspirin: the risk of ulcers may increase, and aspirin may become less effective. Rarely, salicylate toxicity can occur when corticosteroid treatment is stopped after use with high-dose aspirin. - Barbiturates, phenytoin or rifampin: these can speed up the breakdown of fludrocortisone and reduce its effect. - Anabolic steroids: these can increase fluid retention and swelling, particularly in people with liver or heart disease. - Estrogen: starting or stopping estrogen treatment may require your doctor to adjust corticosteroid treatment. Vaccines may cause neurological complications or fail to produce an adequate antibody response during corticosteroid treatment. Discuss planned vaccinations with your doctor.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
