Before taking this medicine

Esbriet is not recommended for people with severe liver impairment or end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis. People with liver or kidney impairment need monitoring for adverse reactions; their prescriber may need to adjust or stop treatment. Esbriet can cause liver enzyme elevations and liver injury, including severe and fatal cases. Liver blood tests are needed before and during treatment. Avoid sunlight and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing daily because Esbriet can cause sensitivity to sunlight and rash. Severe skin reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis and DRESS, have been reported. Treatment must be interrupted if signs or symptoms occur and permanently stopped if a severe skin reaction is confirmed. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, acid reflux and abdominal pain may require treatment changes or stopping treatment. Smoking can reduce exposure to Esbriet and may affect its effectiveness.
