About Epipen
Overview
EpiPen contains epinephrine and is used for emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. These reactions may be triggered by insect stings or bites, foods, medicines or other allergens. It works by stimulating targets in the body called alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. EpiPen is an emergency supportive treatment and does not replace immediate medical care.
What it treats
- Emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis caused by insect stings or bites, foods, medicines, allergen immunotherapy, diagnostic testing substances or other allergens. - Exercise-induced anaphylaxis and anaphylaxis with no known cause. EpiPen provides immediate emergency support and is not a substitute for immediate medical care.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include anxiety, feeling worried or restless, shaking, weakness, dizziness, sweating, a pounding or fluttering heartbeat, pale skin, nausea, vomiting, headache and difficulty breathing. These effects may be more likely in people with high blood pressure or an overactive thyroid. Seek immediate medical or hospital care after using EpiPen. Serious side effects reported include abnormal heart rhythms, including potentially fatal rhythms; bleeding in the brain following a rapid rise in blood pressure; chest pain in people with coronary artery disease; and rare cases of stress-related heart muscle damage. Rare but serious skin and soft tissue infections, including infections that destroy tissue and gas gangrene, have occurred after injection. Seek medical care if signs or symptoms of infection develop. Accidental injection into the fingers, toes, hands or feet can reduce blood flow to the affected area and requires immediate medical attention. It may cause pale or cold skin, reduced sensation or injury. Injection injuries can include bruising, bleeding, cuts, bone injury, or bent or embedded needles, particularly if a young child moves during injection.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications. Use with caution in people with heart disease, as epinephrine may worsen angina or cause abnormal heart rhythms. Older adults may be at greater risk of side effects. The presence of a sulfite in this product should not deter use. Seek immediate medical or hospital care when using this medicine. Do not inject into a vein, the buttock, fingers, toes, hands or feet. When giving an injection to a young child, hold the child’s leg firmly and limit movement before and during injection to reduce the risk of injury. Rare serious skin and soft tissue infections have been reported after epinephrine injection; seek medical care if signs or symptoms of infection develop.
Interactions
Epinephrine can interact with the following medicines: • Cardiac glycosides, diuretics and medicines for irregular heart rhythms (anti-arrhythmics): careful monitoring for irregular heart rhythms is needed when used with epinephrine. • Tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), levothyroxine and certain antihistamines, including chlorpheniramine, tripelennamine and diphenhydramine: these may increase epinephrine’s effects. • Beta-blockers, such as propranolol: these can reduce epinephrine’s effects on stimulating the heart and opening the airways. • Alpha-blockers, such as phentolamine: these can reduce epinephrine’s effects on narrowing blood vessels and raising blood pressure. • Ergot alkaloids: these may reverse epinephrine’s blood-pressure-raising effect. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.
