Long-term Safety of Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors Has Not Been Established
Although a causal relationship has not been established, rare cases of malignancy (e.g., skin and lymphoma) have been reported in patients treated with topical calcineurin inhibitors, including ELIDEL Cream.
Therefore:
Continuous long-term use of topical calcineurin inhibitors, including ELIDEL Cream, in any age group should be avoided, and application limited to areas of involvement with atopic dermatitis.
ELIDEL Cream is not indicated for use in children less than 2 years of age.
About Elidel
Overview
Elidel is a prescription cream containing pimecrolimus for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema). It is used in adults and children aged 2 years and older who do not have a weakened immune system, when other prescription skin treatments have not worked well enough or are not advisable. It is intended for short-term treatment or intermittent longer-term treatment, rather than continuous use. Pimecrolimus is an immunosuppressant, meaning it suppresses immune activity.
What it treats
- Mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in adults and children aged 2 years and older who do not have a weakened immune system, when other prescription skin treatments have not worked adequately or are not advisable. Used as a second-line treatment for short-term or intermittent longer-term treatment.
Safety information
Side effects
Burning where Elidel is applied was the most common application-site reaction, reported in 8%–26% of treated patients in clinical trials. Other reported effects included irritation, redness and itching at the application site, headache, fever, cough, cold-like symptoms, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. These events were recorded whether or not they were caused by Elidel. Contact a doctor if you develop an allergic reaction, hives or signs of a skin infection. Reported infections included impetigo, infected hair follicles and herpes skin infections. Application-site reactions and skin infections were the main reasons patients stopped treatment because of adverse events. Two cases of septic arthritis, a serious joint infection, were reported in infants under one year old in clinical trials. It has not been established whether Elidel caused these cases.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Elidel if you have a history of an allergic reaction to pimecrolimus or any other ingredient in the cream.
Interactions
Interactions between Elidel and other medicines, including vaccines, have not been systematically studied. Because blood levels of pimecrolimus are low after skin application, interactions affecting the whole body are not expected, but cannot be ruled out. Tell your doctor if you take erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, calcium channel blockers or cimetidine. These medicines inhibit enzymes called CYP3A, and the label advises caution when they are used with Elidel in people with widespread skin disease or erythroderma (extensive skin redness).

Store below 25°C with the cap closed, away from direct light and heat. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
