About Diflucan

Overview

Diflucan contains fluconazole, a triazole antifungal medicine. It is used to treat Candida infections of the vagina, mouth, throat and esophagus, as well as cryptococcal meningitis. It works by blocking a fungal enzyme needed to make ergosterol, a component of fungal cell membranes, which can inhibit fungal growth.

What it treats

- Vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida. - Candida infections of the mouth, throat and esophagus. - Cryptococcal meningitis. - Candida infections of the urinary tract, abdominal lining, bloodstream, lungs or multiple parts of the body. Evidence for these uses came from small studies without a comparison group.

Safety information

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Diflucan if you have had an allergic reaction to fluconazole or any of its ingredients. It must not be taken with medicines that both prolong the QT interval (affecting the heart’s electrical rhythm) and are broken down by the enzyme CYP3A4, such as erythromycin, pimozide or quinidine. Tell your prescriber if you have had an allergic reaction to another azole antifungal. Caution is needed because it is not known whether an allergy to another azole also means you will be allergic to fluconazole.

Interactions

Fluconazole can slow the breakdown of other medicines by blocking liver enzymes called CYP2C9, CYP2C19 and CYP3A4. This can raise levels of those medicines in the blood and increase the risk of side effects, especially for medicines where small changes in blood levels can cause harm. Tell your doctor about other medicines you take, as careful monitoring may be needed. This interaction effect can continue for 4 to 5 days after fluconazole is stopped.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
