Overview
Depo‑SubQ Provera 104 contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, a progestin used to prevent pregnancy in females who can become pregnant. It is a prescription medicine supplied in a pre-filled syringe. It works by suppressing hormone signals that lead to egg maturation and release, and by thickening cervical mucus. Use for longer than two years is not recommended unless other birth control options are considered inadequate.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting, headache, abdominal pain or discomfort, weight gain, nervousness, dizziness and reduced sex drive. Serious risks include loss of bone mineral density, blood clots, breast cancer, meningioma and severe allergic reactions. Severe allergic reactions need emergency medical treatment. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop jaundice, liver problems or severe abdominal pain, or if you become pregnant while using this medicine. Pregnancy or severe abdominal pain needs assessment for a possible ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the womb). Treatment must be stopped if a blood clot or meningioma is diagnosed, or if jaundice or liver problems develop. People with diabetes or a strong family history of breast cancer need careful monitoring.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use this medicine if you have active inflammation of a vein with a blood clot, current or previous blood clot disorders, disease affecting the brain’s blood vessels, known or suspected breast cancer, significant liver disease, or vaginal bleeding with no diagnosed cause. Do not use it if you are allergic to medroxyprogesterone acetate or any other ingredient. Careful monitoring is needed if you have diabetes or a strong family history of breast cancer. Patients should also be monitored for signs and symptoms of meningioma. Treatment must be stopped if a blood clot develops, meningioma is diagnosed, or jaundice or liver function problems occur. If pregnancy occurs, stop treatment. Pregnancy or severe abdominal pain during use requires assessment for ectopic pregnancy. Severe allergic reactions require emergency medical treatment. Medroxyprogesterone acetate has been detected in breast milk. This medicine is not indicated before the first menstrual period.
Interactions
Medicines or herbal products that increase the activity of certain enzymes, including CYP3A4, may make medroxyprogesterone acetate less effective at preventing pregnancy. Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you use. If you use an enzyme-inducing product, use a backup or alternative method of contraception and discuss suitable options with your doctor.
