About Cytotec

Overview

Cytotec is a prescription tablet containing misoprostol, a synthetic version of prostaglandin E1. It helps reduce the risk of stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs, including aspirin, in people at high risk of ulcers or ulcer complications. Misoprostol acts as a prostaglandin E1 analogue. Cytotec has not been shown to reduce duodenal ulcers or relieve stomach pain or discomfort associated with NSAID use.

What it treats

Reducing the risk of stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs, including aspirin, in patients at high risk of ulcers or ulcer complications, such as older adults, people with debilitating illnesses, or those with a history of ulcers.

When to call your doctor

• Contact your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant while taking Cytotec. Use during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, birth defects, premature birth or tearing of the uterus.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Cytotec to reduce the risk of ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) if you are pregnant. Do not take Cytotec if you have a history of allergy to prostaglandins.

Interactions

Cytotec may increase the effects of medicines that stimulate uterine contractions, such as oxytocin, especially if Cytotec is given less than 4 hours before oxytocin is started. Using them together is not recommended. Tell your doctor if you are receiving or are due to receive oxytocin. Cytotec has not been shown to interfere with aspirin’s benefits for rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. It has no clinically significant effect on aspirin absorption, blood levels or antiplatelet activity, or on how the body processes diclofenac or ibuprofen.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
