About Crestor

Overview

Crestor contains rosuvastatin, a statin medicine supplied as prescription tablets. It is used alongside diet and exercise to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and slow the progression of atherosclerosis in adults, and to lower LDL cholesterol in children with certain inherited cholesterol conditions. It is also used to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke, in adults at increased risk, and alongside diet to treat high triglycerides and primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. It works by blocking an enzyme involved in making cholesterol.

What it treats

• Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal stroke or an artery-opening procedure in adults at increased cardiovascular risk. • High LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in adults, alongside diet and exercise. • Slowing the progression of atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries) in adults, alongside diet and exercise. • Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and children aged 8 years and older, alongside diet and exercise. • Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and children aged 7 years and older, alongside diet and exercise. • Primary dysbetalipoproteinemia, a disorder of blood fats, in adults, alongside diet. • High triglycerides in adults, alongside diet.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include headache, nausea, muscle pain, weakness or lack of energy, and constipation. Serious side effects include muscle damage and severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), which can lead to kidney failure. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Rare cases of an autoimmune muscle disease called immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy have also been reported with statin use. Liver enzyme levels may rise, and rare cases of liver failure, including fatal cases, have been reported. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes. Your doctor may check liver enzymes before treatment and when clinically needed. Other reported effects include protein or blood in the urine and increases in blood sugar and HbA1c, a measure of longer-term blood sugar levels. Contact your doctor if you notice blood in your urine.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling generally unwell. - Seek medical attention immediately if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Crestor if you have acute liver failure, decompensated cirrhosis (severe liver disease), or an allergy to rosuvastatin or any of its other ingredients. Reported allergic reactions include rash, itching, hives and angioedema (swelling). Crestor can cause muscle injury, including rhabdomyolysis, a serious muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney failure. The risk is higher in people aged 65 or older, those with uncontrolled hypothyroidism or kidney impairment, and those taking certain other medicines or higher doses. Asian patients may also be at higher risk. Promptly report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Treatment may need to be stopped if muscle injury is suspected or during a serious illness that increases the risk of kidney failure from muscle breakdown. A rare autoimmune muscle condition has also been reported with statins and requires stopping Crestor if suspected. Crestor can raise liver enzymes, and rare cases of liver failure have been reported. Your prescriber may check liver enzymes before treatment and when clinically needed. Serious liver injury, including jaundice, requires prompt discontinuation. Crestor may harm an unborn baby. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, especially: - Other medicines that increase the risk of muscle injury or severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) when used with Crestor. - Antacids containing both aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. The timing matters; ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them from Crestor. - Warfarin. Your INR, a measure of blood clotting, should be checked before starting Crestor and monitored frequently until stable when Crestor is started, adjusted or stopped.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
