About Creon
Overview
Creon capsules contain pancrelipase, a mixture of lipase, protease and amylase enzymes derived from pig pancreatic glands. It treats exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, where the pancreas does not provide enough digestive enzymes, due to cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, removal of the pancreas or other conditions. These enzymes work in the small intestine to break down fats, proteins and starches, acting like the digestive enzymes normally supplied by the pancreas.

Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include vomiting, dizziness and cough in patients with cystic fibrosis. In patients with chronic pancreatitis or those who have had their pancreas removed, reported effects include high or low blood sugar, abdominal pain, abnormal stools, gas, frequent bowel movements, and inflammation of the nose and throat. Contact a doctor if you develop serious side effects. These include fibrosing colonopathy (scarring and narrowing of the colon), high uric acid levels in the blood, and allergic reactions. These have been reported with pancreatic enzyme products containing pancrelipase. Fibrosing colonopathy is associated with high-dose pancreatic enzyme use in patients with cystic fibrosis. Caution is needed if you have gout, kidney impairment, high uric acid levels or an allergy to proteins from pigs. Creon can irritate the lining of the mouth if chewed or held in the mouth. Do not chew it or keep it in your mouth.

Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications for Creon. Caution is needed in people with gout, kidney impairment, high uric acid levels or a known allergy to pig proteins. High-dose pancreatic enzyme treatment has been associated with fibrosing colonopathy, a condition affecting the colon, in people with cystic fibrosis. Do not chew Creon or hold it in your mouth, as this may cause irritation. Like all pancreatic enzyme products, Creon carries a theoretical risk of transmitting viruses.

Storage
