About Buspar
Overview
Buspar contains buspirone, an anti-anxiety medicine supplied as tablets. It is used to manage anxiety disorders or provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. Anxiety or tension associated with everyday stress usually does not require treatment with an anti-anxiety medicine.
What it treats
Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), or short-term relief of anxiety symptoms.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of buspirone include dizziness, nausea, headache, nervousness, lightheadedness and excitement. Other reported effects include drowsiness, trouble sleeping, tiredness, dry mouth, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, blurred vision, numbness, tingling, tremor and rash. Contact a doctor promptly if you experience chest pain, fainting, shortness of breath, seizures, hallucinations, involuntary movements, thoughts of suicide, facial swelling, unusual bruising or bleeding, or rectal bleeding. Serious events reported during clinical evaluation also included stroke, heart attack, heart failure and changes in blood cell counts. For events reported in studies without appropriate controls, it was not possible to establish whether buspirone caused them.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Buspar if you are allergic to buspirone hydrochloride. Do not take Buspar with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) used to treat depression, or within 14 days after stopping one. Do not start an MAOI used to treat depression until at least 14 days after stopping Buspar. These combinations can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome and/or high blood pressure. Do not start Buspar while receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, as this increases the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Interactions
Do not take buspirone with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) used to treat depression. A gap of at least 14 days is required after stopping either medicine before starting the other, because of the risk of serotonin syndrome and/or raised blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you take: • Diazepam: increases in levels of a diazepam breakdown product and minor effects such as dizziness, headache and nausea have been reported. • Haloperidol: buspirone may increase haloperidol levels in the blood; the clinical importance is unclear. • Trazodone: raised liver enzymes were reported in a few patients taking this combination, but another study did not confirm this finding. • Other medicines that act on the brain or nervous system: most combinations with buspirone have not been studied and should be used cautiously.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
