About Bimzelx

Overview

Bimzelx (bimekizumab) is a prescription monoclonal antibody medicine injected under the skin. It treats adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for treatment that acts throughout the body or light therapy, and adults with moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa. It also treats adults with active psoriatic arthritis, active ankylosing spondylitis, or active non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis with objective signs of inflammation. It works by blocking the activity of immune-system proteins called IL-17A and IL-17F, reducing signals that promote inflammation.

What it treats

- Moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. - Active psoriatic arthritis in adults. - Active non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis in adults with objective signs of inflammation. - Active ankylosing spondylitis in adults. - Moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa in adults.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects vary by the condition being treated. They include upper respiratory tract infections, oral thrush and other fungal infections, headache, injection-site reactions or pain, diarrhea, stomach and intestinal infections, cold sores or other herpes simplex infections, acne, inflamed hair follicles, tiredness, and urinary tract infections. Other common effects reported for some conditions include cough, muscle or other musculoskeletal pain, tonsillitis, rash, vaginal yeast infections, and raised liver enzymes. Serious risks include: • New or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, or other mood changes. Seek medical attention promptly if these occur, or call the U.S. Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. Patients, caregivers, and families should watch for these changes. • Infections. Bimzelx may increase the risk of infection. Contact a doctor if signs or symptoms of a significant infection develop. Bimzelx should not be administered until the infection resolves. • Liver test abnormalities. Liver blood tests are needed before treatment and during routine care. Bimzelx must be permanently stopped if it causes combined increases in certain liver enzymes and bilirubin. • New or worsening inflammatory bowel disease. Contact a doctor if signs or symptoms develop or worsen; treatment should be stopped if this occurs. Bimzelx should be avoided in people with active inflammatory bowel disease.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention promptly for new or worsening depression, thoughts of suicide, or other mood changes. You can also call the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. - Seek medical advice if you develop signs or symptoms of a significant infection. - Contact your doctor if symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease appear or worsen.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The label lists no formal contraindications. However, Bimzelx should be avoided in people with active tuberculosis (TB) or active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Conditions requiring caution include: - A history of severe depression or suicidal thoughts or behaviour: the prescriber should carefully weigh the risks and benefits. Bimzelx may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviour. Patients, caregivers and families should watch for new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or other mood changes. Seek medical attention promptly if these occur, or call the US Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. - Infections: Bimzelx may increase the risk of infection. Seek medical advice for signs of a significant infection. If one develops, Bimzelx should not be given until it resolves. - Latent TB: treatment for latent TB must begin before Bimzelx treatment. - Liver abnormalities: liver enzymes, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin should be checked before treatment and during routine care. Bimzelx must be permanently stopped if it causes combined elevations of liver enzymes called transaminases and bilirubin. - New or worsening IBD symptoms: monitoring is needed, and treatment should be stopped if these occur. Live vaccines should be avoided during Bimzelx treatment.

Storage

Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
