About Azulfidine
Overview
Azulfidine tablets contain sulphasalazine, an anti-inflammatory medicine. It is used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and alongside other treatment for severe ulcerative colitis. It is also used to help prolong remission between acute attacks. Its action helps reduce inflammation.
What it treats
- Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. - Severe ulcerative colitis, alongside other treatment. - Maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis, to prolong the time between acute attacks.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include loss of appetite, headache, nausea, vomiting and stomach discomfort. Reduced sperm count is also listed among the most common effects and appears to be reversible. Contact a doctor if you develop a rash, itching, hives or fever. Less common or rare serious reactions listed in the label include severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis and DRESS, blood disorders, liver inflammation or failure, kidney damage, lung or heart inflammation, pancreatitis, seizures and other nervous system problems. Some listed reactions are associated with related sulfonamide medicines rather than reported specifically with Azulfidine. Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic or skin reaction, seizures, or blue discoloration of the skin. Bloody diarrhoea, blood in the urine, markedly reduced urination or unusual bleeding also warrant prompt medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Azulfidine if you have a blockage in your intestines or urinary tract, or if you have porphyria, as sulfonamides may trigger an acute attack. Do not take it if you are allergic to sulphasalazine, its breakdown products, sulfonamides or salicylates.
Interactions
Azulfidine may reduce the absorption of folic acid and digoxin when taken together. Tell your doctor if you take digoxin or supplements containing folic acid.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
