About Asacol
Overview
Asacol is a delayed-release tablet containing mesalamine, an anti-inflammatory medicine. It is used to treat mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis and to maintain remission. The tablet’s coating delays release until the medicine reaches the end of the small intestine and beyond, where mesalamine acts locally to reduce inflammation in the colon.

Safety information
Side effects
Commonly reported side effects include headache, abdominal pain, belching, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, gas, dizziness, weakness, back or joint pain, fever, rash and itching. Contact a doctor if you develop worsening colitis, bloody diarrhea, rectal bleeding or other gastrointestinal bleeding. Serious reported effects also include inflammation of the pancreas, heart muscle or the lining around the heart; kidney inflammation or kidney failure; and liver injury, including hepatitis, jaundice and liver failure. Some reported liver cases were fatal. Other serious reported effects include blood disorders such as low white blood cell or platelet counts and aplastic anemia, inflammation of the lungs, worsening asthma, and rare nerve or spinal cord disorders. Contact a doctor for chest pain, breathing problems, yellowing of the skin or eyes, blood in the urine, or new numbness or weakness. The frequency of many serious reactions cannot be reliably estimated from the available reports.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Asacol if you are allergic to salicylates or any ingredient in the tablet.
