About Aggrastat
Overview
Aggrastat contains tirofiban hydrochloride and is given intravenously to inhibit platelet clumping. It is used in patients with non-ST elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) to reduce the risk of clot-related cardiovascular events, including death, heart attack, or persistent reduced blood flow to the heart requiring a repeat cardiac procedure. It works by blocking a receptor on platelets, making them less able to stick together and form clots.

Safety information
Side effects
Bleeding is the most commonly reported side effect of Aggrastat and can be serious. Contact a doctor immediately if bleeding cannot be controlled; Aggrastat must be stopped in this situation. Thrombocytopenia (a low platelet count) can also occur. If this develops, Aggrastat and heparin must be stopped by the treating healthcare team.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Aggrastat must not be used in people who: • Are allergic to Aggrastat or any of its components, including those who have had a severe allergic reaction such as anaphylaxis. • Have previously developed a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) after receiving Aggrastat. • Have active internal bleeding or a history of a bleeding disorder. • Have had major surgery or severe physical injury within the past month. Aggrastat can cause serious bleeding. If bleeding cannot be controlled, treatment must be stopped. If a low platelet count develops, Aggrastat and heparin must be stopped. Severe kidney impairment requires caution and a dose reduction determined by the prescriber.
Interactions
Using Aggrastat with clot-dissolving medicines (fibrinolytics), anticoagulants or other antiplatelet medicines increases the risk of bleeding. Tell your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Prepared infusions are handled by the treating clinic. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
